Often the first thing people go to a chiropractor for is neck or back pain. While this is a very good reason to seek chiropractic care, there are many other things that can be improved as well. Especially important in pregnant patients is a misalignment of the pelvis, or specifically sacrum, commonly known as the tailbone. As a chiropractor specializing in maternal care and pediatrics in Woodbury, Minnesota, I see the benefits of the unique care that this population of patients needs. If you are pregnant, contact my office today to learn more.
Misalignment of the sacrum can cause torsion of certain muscles and ligaments in the pelvis, pulling on the uterus and constraining its natural position. This can prevent the baby from getting into the head down position for birth, and instead be breech, lying sideways (transverse), or even occiput anterior (commonly referred to as “sunny side up”). The good news is, there is a specific sacral analysis and adjustment that facilitates neuro-biomechanic balance in the pelvis and its surrounding structures, called the Webster Technique.
During my training with the International Pediatric Chiropractic Association, I became certified in this technique. Dr. Larry Webster discovered it as a safe and effective way to restore pelvic balance, especially in the pregnant population. He also observed that mothers who reported that their babies were in the wrong position initially, reported that they went into the ideal vertex, occiput posterior position after care. I use this technique throughout pregnancy to optimize and maintain pelvic balance. C-section use is on the rise, and is not without risk, complications, or detriment to mom and baby. By implementing safe and effective care, reducing stress on the nervous system, and creating neuro-bio mechanical balance in the pelvis with the Webster Technique, drastic procedures during delivery can often be prevented.
